Michigan was admitted to the Union on January 26, 1837. Its current U.S. senators are Democrats Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin. Carl Levin was Michigan's longest-serving senator (1979–2015). Ferry) served as President of the Senate from November 22, 1875 to March 3, 1877 (as acting Vice President of the United States).
