In 2007, a study was conducted by the University of Bologna on around 5000 fetishist participants to see the prevalence of fetishes. The study analyzed the content inside online fetish communities and found only 669 participants (approximately 13%) referring to nails, an extension of hand fetishism.

In popular culture

In Hirohiko Araki's popular manga series, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4: Diamond Is Unbreakable, the main antagonist, a serial killer named Yoshikage Kira, has a notable hand fetish which drives most of his homicidal actions.

Dr. Hannibal Lecter from the novel The Silence of the Lambs and its film adaptation. Lecter is known for his obsession with hands, particularly those of his victims, which he uses to create a macabre piece of art.

In music, hand fetishism has been explored in songs such as Madonna's "Erotica," in which she sings about the erotic appeal of a lover's hands. These songs demonstrate the ways in which hand fetishism can be incorporated into popular music to create a sensual and erotic atmosphere.

In the world of art, hand fetishism has been explored by numerous artists, including Salvador Dalí, who created a painting titled The Persistence of Memory, which features a distorted hand with ants crawling over it. Similarly, the photographer Man Ray created a series of images featuring disembodied hands, which were intended to evoke erotic and surreal feelings in the viewer.

In Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight Archive, Vorin culture dictates that a woman's left hand (“safe hand”) should remain covered in public settings. In the lower classes (“darkeyes”) this may be accomplished with a glove. In the upper classes (“lighteyes”) it is more commonly done with a garment called a “havah”, which is a dress with an elongated left sleeve that encompasses the hand. Fans of the Stormlight Archive (who collectively refer to themselves as “Dougs”) have consistently applied Rule 34 across Sanderson's work and eagerly interpreted safe hand voyeurism into a form of hand fetishism (example).
